June 4th, 2010 - NS Rowing Award Winners announced

Nova Scotia Rowing is pleased to announce the "Rowing" recipients of the 2010 RICOH Provincial Sport Awards. The recipients, along with NS Rowing President, Yetta Withrow, will attend the Sport Awards banquet on Saturday, June 5th at the World Trade and Convention Centre.

Katherine Harman - Female Athlete of the Year
Sue Duann - Volunteer of the Year
Linda Lee - Official of the Year

Katherine Harman learned to row 10 years ago, and has been a member of Halifax Rowing Club ever since. Shortly before turning 50, Katherine was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy in January of 2009. Just weeks after her surgery, Katherine returned to indoor rowing training to assist with her physical and emotional recovery. Her 2009 racing season culminated at the 127th Royal Canadian Henley Regatta held in St. Catharine’s, Ontario where she came in first in the Women’s Masters Single event (Age 50-55). What is remarkable about her performance is that not only did she win her event, she was the fastest woman single sculler of any age category on the water that day.

Sue Duann volunteers her time with the MicMac Rowing Club. Sue is integral to the operation of this club and has been for many years. Sue has been on the board for the MicMac Amateur Aquatic Club (MMAAC) for 3 years - in this role, she is a strong advocate for all rowers and the rowing community. As well as the Board responsibilities, Sue has also been the Director of Mic Mac Rowing Club - the first 2 years she was on her own as the Director and the most recent 2 years as a Co-Director. She is a devoted volunteer and the club benefits greatly from all that she does.

Linda Lee has served as a Rowing Canada umpire since the mid-nineties and has acted as the Chief Umpire for Nova Scotia since 2006. In this capacity, she has volunteered countless hours to ensure that local regattas are run efficiently, fairly and safely. She has umpired, not only in Nova Scotia but, in other provinces including the 2009 Canada Summer Games in PEI, the Quebec Inter-Provincial Rowing Championships in Montreal and Rowing Canada's National Rowing Championships to name just a few. Linda currently serves as the provincial umpire representative to the Rowing Canada Umpires Members-at-Large Committee and is also a trained Umpire clinician, training and mentoring new rowing officials in Nova Scotia.

Effective this week, Rowing Canada Aviron's President is Dr. Michael Murphy of London, Ontario.

Murphy, a former national team rower, was an RCA board member from 1985 to 2002, serving as president or past president for the last 13 years. During the latter period, he was a key figure in the centralization, the systematization and the professionalization of the organization.

Murphy, who will provide direction and leadership to RCA leading up to the Summer Olympics in 2012, is the former chair of the Sport Alliance of Ontario and was co-chair of the 2004 Ontario Summer and Winter Games. Gordon and Lightweight Doubles partner Nicole Gough had won Silver two weeks earlier in the same event at the Brock Invitational and Bow-seat, Gordon, had raced to a Bronze one year ago, making this a personal victory as well as a stellar performance. Although leading the entire 2000m distance, Gordon and Gough were pressured hard by second place Brock, who stuck firm with them to the last stoke and pulled up within striking distance several times during the race. Both rowers are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to race again at the Canadian University Championships being held in Montreal from October 30-31st.

Congratulations Kerith.

October 2, 2008 - Thanksgiving Tour for NSRA members in Antigonish

Conrad 1.JPGThe leaves are changing and the days are getting shorter and there's no better way to take the Fall colours in than with a leisure row. The newly created Antigonish Rowing Club has been gracious enough to host a rowing tour in the Antigonish Harbour on Monday, October 13 beginning at 10:30am. So if you're suffering the Lake Banook Blues then this is the perfect opportunity to get back on the water one more time!

The club is situated in Antigonish Harbour across from scull island (christened by the first X-Crew) that is the home of nesting bald eagles and other wildlife. There are gypsum cliffs and beautiful views all along the harbour, so make sure you bring your camera! To learn more about the club, check out RCA Domestic Development Officer, Jennifer Parfitt's account of working with the club and helping them get things rowing along. http://www.rowingcanada.org/domestic_rowing/arcreccentre/#cid_603

159_5928.jpgThe tentative plan is to carpool to Antigonish the morning of and be on the water for 10:30am. This should give us ample time to explore the harbour, mix up the crews, and have fun! J Following the row, we'll reward ourselves by dining in Antigonish (location to be determined).

The cost is $10 per person but any additional donations to help the club grow is greatly appreciated. All interested must be a RCA member and as the club is in its growing stages, the boats will need to be wet launched. If you're interested or have further questions, please contact David MacKinnon no later than Wednesday Oct. 8th by email (dmkinnon@hotmail.com) or by phone at 830-6657. Look forward to seeing you on the water!

Press Release from Rowing Canada Aviron - There's still time join in "erg day" in Canada

Rowers don't let the ice and cold deter them from pulling hard during the winter and the best will compete on Feb. 3 to prove their strength on the Ergometer, also known as the rowing machine.

Across Canada on the same day, 2500 rowers of all ages and abilities will race in five Canadian cities: Toronto, Saskatoon, Dartmouth, near Montreal (St-Hyacinthe, Quebec) and Victoria on Concept 2 Model D Ergometers.

The two largest events are in Victoria (entries are due on January 25) and Toronto (entries due by January 27), and are satellite regattas for World Indoor Rowing Championships, to be held on Feb. 24 in Boston.

Included in Toronto's entries will be members of the National Team women's pair and quad that qualified for the 2008 Summer Games, among other Olympic hopefuls.

Although the other events are smaller, they are growing. This year at the Atlantic Indoor Rowing Championships in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, 1000m dashes and a club mixed four event have been added - entries are due by Saturday, January 26.

The Prairie Indoor Rowing Championships at the Saskatoon Field house features "dash for cash" events for men and women. Entries are due by January 28.

May 14, 2007 - Landry introduces the Valley to rowing

SportFairLogo.JPGLast week, from May 9 until May 11, elementary and junior-high students from across the Annapolis Valley attended the Milk Energy Sport Fair at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. The Milk Energy Sport Fair brings together approximately 2,000 students from across the Annapolis Valley to try a variety of sports such as basketball, tennis, baseball and golf to name a few. SportFair.JPG

Among the 29 exhibitors, that included both sport organizations and sponsors, was the NSRA's new Recruitment and Development Officer, Tony Landry.

"This was an amazing opportunity to create greater awareness about our sport within the province," says Landry. "Although, there are no rowing clubs to speak of in the Annapolis Valley, attending the the Sport Fair helped raise the profile of our sport simply by being there. It was also fun to instruct approximately 700 children on the ergometer and to explain to them the difference between rowing and paddling --- we go faster and backwards!"

The Sport Fair, which moves annually, began 6 years ago to help encourage children to get active, find a sport they enjoy and have fun.  Landry was delighted to discover that " it was an interactive sporting event. In a single morning, the children can learn about and participate in different sports that are available throughout the province. A seven year old might be too young to start rowing, but knowledge that the sport exists within the province might be critical in long-term recruitment of athletes in the future."

Tony will continue throughout the summer months to develop greater awareness of rowing throughout the province and to recruit potential new members for the clubs.
